About Dr. Udeme Essien Asibong

Udeme Essien Asibong grew up in Ikot Oduot in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. He obtained his Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Calabar, in Cross River State, Nigeria in 1997, and graduated with an Honours Degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBCH) in 1997. He served as a House Officer in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Cross River State from 1997 to 1998. He did his NYSC in Saint Mary’s General Hospital and Dental Clinic, Eleta, Ibadan, Oyo state in 1998 till 1999. After the NYSC, he worked as a Medical Officer in Elyon Foundation Medical Centre, 109 Old Ikang Road Calabar from 1999 to 2000. He was a Registrar in Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Calabar, Cross River State from 2000 to 2001. He did Residency Training in the Department of Family Medicine, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Cross River State from 2001 – 2009 and obtained Fellowship of the West African College Physicians (FWACP) in November 2009. He is also a Part 1 Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (Part I FMCFM), as at October 2005. He is also a Chief Consultant Family Physician in Department of Family Medicine, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Cross River State since 2016 till date. He was once the Medical Director of the Calabar women and Children hospital, 164/165 Muritala, Mohammed highway, Calabar 2014 - 2019. Currently, he is an Associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medical sciences, University of Calabar since October 2017. He is an Examiner of the West African College of Physicians since October 2010. He has been Head of Training and Research in the Department of Family Medicine, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital Calabar and Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Nigeria between 2014 to 2019. He is Editorial Adviser to many journals including the Cross River Journal of Medicine and Journal of Medicine in Africa. He is the current Head and Coordinator of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital Calabar. His responsibilities include but not limited to Provision of comprehensive, coordinated, compassionate and continuing medical care to individuals and families irrespective of type of disease, age of client, gender, place of domicile, cultural background, religious affiliation or sexual orientation. His core duties include Training of medical students and postgraduate doctors, Clinical service delivery and Research. His Fellowship dissertation in WEST AFRICAN COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS was: Recognizing psychiatric morbidity among patients attending the General Out-Patient Clinic of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar; October 2009. He was awarded 2ndposition in the Part II Fellowship Examination in the Faculty of Family Medicine of the West African College of Physicians (October, 2009). He has 44 publications, where more than 50% are in High Impact factor Journals. He has been Faculty of Medicine Representative in the University of Calabar (2019 – 2021). Asibong has served for 12 years in the institution and expecting to be promoted to a full Professor.
