About Dr. Philip Etabee Macdonald Bassey

Dr Philip Etabee Macdonald Bassey worked as a medical officer with the Cross River State Ministry of Health from 1988 to 2005. In 2006, he joined the World Health Organization as a National Professional Officer for HIV/AID and served in that capacity till 2008. At the end of his tenure with W.H.O., he was engaged briefly in 2009 by Family Health International as a Health Officer to oversee a USAID funded HIV/AIDS control program in Yakurr LGA. In 2010, he served as Regional Health and Care Manager of the International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies. From 2011-2012, he was appointed Health Specialist to the DFID funded Support to National Malaria Program (SuNMAP). He joined the Department of Public Health, University of Calabar as Lecturer I in 2013. He graduated with MB.BCh from the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Nigeria in 1984. He obtained a post graduate Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Public Health (DTMPH) from the Swiss Tropical Institute, Basel, Switzerland in 1996. He proceeded to the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel in 1988 where he obtained a Master in Public Health (MPH) in 1999. In 2013 he proceeded to Mahidol University in Thailand for his PhD in Clinical Epidemiology, which he completed in 2019. In collaboration with colleagues in the Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences, a TETFUND Research grant for a KAP study on menstrual hygiene among adolescent secondary school girls was obtained in 2014. Since joining the University, he has been teaching, reseaerching and mentoring both staff and students thereby contributing to the growth of the University.While working with the Cross River State Ministry of Health and later with W.H.O. as a National Professional Officer for HIV/AIDS and then as Health Specialist with SuNMAP, he had delivered talks on HIV/AIDS, malaria and other-health-related issues at different fora. Dr Bassey has attended many conferences, symposia, seminars and other update programmes where he presents papers in his field. He has assisted in the supervision of the research project of graduate (MPH) students in the Department of Public Health. He participated in a multi-country WHO Tropical Diseases Research on onchocerciasis while working with the Cross River State Ministry of Health in 2003. On joining the University in 2013, as part of a research team, they applied for a TETFUND research grant to undertake a quasi-experimental study on menstrual hygiene practices among adolescent school girls in selected secondary schools in Calabar/Akpabuyo in 2015. His PhD research project conducted in 2018/19 in the field of genetic epidemiology is on the association of AHSG polymorphism with BMI and low eGFR: A Mendelian randomization and Mediation analysis using data of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) cohort. He is a member of the Nigerian Medical Association, Cross River State branch.
