Dr Mfon Akpaso is a seasoned and erudite scholar, who is well-versed in Anatomical Sciences. She has, over the years, acquired unique skills and capabilities in teaching and research and rendering services to students both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Dr Akpaso is a medical doctor and has served as a Consultant to International Organizations including Concern Universal, SNR and ENR. She obtained her MBBch degree in 1997 from the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar. In 2010, she was awarded an M.Sc. degree in Human Anatomy and in 2016, a Ph.D in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the same University. Dr Akpaso also has research interests in endocrinology, teratology and developmental biology. She joined the services of University of Calabar in 2003 as Lecturer II. In 2006, she was appointed examinations officer for B.Sc. Anatomy program, a position she held till 2009. In 2013, she was appointed examinations officer for the MBBch program in Human Anatomy. She served in that position till 2016, when she was appointed the acting Head of Department of Anatomical Sciences. Dr Akpaso has also been involved teaching, mentoring and counseling of students, thus contributing to the graduation of the students in the University. She has successfully supervised and co-supervised a number of undergraduate and graduate students in several areas of Anatomical Sciences. She has also served the University in many Committees including Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences Students’ Welfare Committee (2015 till date), Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences Lecture Series Committee ((2014-2016), Faculty of basic Medical Sciences Quality Assurance Committee (2018 till date), Department of Human Anatomy Welfare Committee (2015 to 2019) and so on. She has authored/coauthored several peer reviewed journal articles spread across both local and international journals and has participated in many conferences, workshops, seminars, symposia and other update programs some of which she made presentations. Dr Akpaso co-authored a textbook on Phytomedicine with Prof. Patrick Ebong of Biochemistry Department and was one of the recipients of the Institution-based Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) grant in 2014. She has many meritorious service awards in the University and outside the University especially in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention. She is a member of some professional associations including the Anatomical Society of Nigeria, Nigerian Medical Association, Association of Medical Doctors in Academics, Society of Experimental Biology in Nigeria among others. Dr Akpaso is married with two daughters.
