About Dr. Joseph Kayefor Ebigwai

Dr. Joseph Kayefor Ebigwai was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Plant and Ecological Studies, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Calabar in 2017. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Taxonomy and Systematic from the University of Port Harcourt. He has lectured and mentored students across all strata of tertiary institutions in Nigeria to wit: Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, and Delta State College of Physical Education, Mosogar. He teaches Taxonomy, Biodiversity, Environmental Pollution, Conservation, and Ecological courses at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. His research interest, in addition to, the aforementioned areas is developing periodicity for the authentication of plant species and mapping of threatened species in the Cross River National Park. He has published over 43 journal articles in learned journals and presented about 15 conference papers in Nigeria and abroad. Dr. Ebigwai has conducted over 200 technical studies in Environmental Management, is on several government review panels on Environmental Impact Assessment, has graduated six postgraduate students, and supervised over 200 undergraduate students. He has several industrial experiences in the oil and gas, construction, and agro-allied sectors for which he provided technical and environmental services. He has organized several talks and sensitization campaigns on environmental management and the impacts of poaching and uncontrolled logging in protected areas. He is a member of several professional bodies to wit; the Botanical Society of Nigeria, Botanical Society of America, International Association of Plant Taxonomists, Palynological Association of Nigeria, West African Association of Quaternary Palynologists, and the Nigerian Environmental Society. More recently he led the team on the approved version of the Biodiversity Action Plans for the Calabar Superhighway and Giant Cement Works Limited. He is the Senior Partner at Mifor Consult Nigeria Limited and environmental and geotechnical firms. He is research-oriented, self-motivated, and aspires to be a solution to global environmental and taxonomic challenges. Specifically, Joseph Ebigwai has been involved in: Terrestrial and aquatic bioassessment of flora and fauna, Development of bioassessment protocols for monitoring of terrestrial biodiversity, Biodiversity study of wetlands and other habitats in Nigeria, Linking multivariate and multimetric approaches for ecological studies, Ecology of Cross River National Park, Nigeria, Superimposition of projects on the environment for impact assessment watershed monitoring and restoration, Physical and chemical characteristics of selected water bodies in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria. Operating, generation, and interpretation of environmental baseline data using GC MS, AAS, and FTIR/UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Team Lead for over 200 Environmental studies in Nigeria and Africa, Ecological consultant to Federal Ministry of Environment and DPR, External assessor on Environmental Due Diligence with ERM, Development of Environmental Plans including the accepted version Biodiversity Action Plan for Cross River Super Highway, The effect of various pollutants discharged into the water on the ecology of the aquatic biota, Assessment of heavy metals in sediments, surface waters, flora and speciation, Sublethal and lethal exposure of toxicants to aquatic lives.
