About Prof. Eno Grace Nta

Professor Eno Grace Nta has been involved in teaching at the Department of English and Literary Studies, University of Calabar from 1980 when she was appointed an Assistant Lecturer and became a Professor in October 2012. She holds a B.A.(1978) and M.A (1980) in Language Arts from the University of Ibadan, an MATEFL (1992) from the University of Reading, England; and a Ph.D in English and Literary Studies, (2004) from the University of Calabar. Her major interest is Applied Language Studies with much of her research effort in Second Language Acquisition, Discourse Studies and English in Nigeria. This has exposed her to literacy activities at all levels. She won the Department of Language Arts prize in 1975/ 1976 and was awarded University of Ibadan Postgraduate Merit in Award 1979/80. In 1990/91 Prof. Eno Nta was a beneficiary of the British Govt. Technical Cooperation Programme in English Language for which she earned a Cerificate and in 1991 was sponsored for an MA in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language, at the University of Reading, England. In addition, she was part of a team that was involved in a RAN-SHELL-READ grant literacy project in Akpabuyo in 2001/2002. Professor Nta has taught language courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels and has supervised numerous undergraduate projects, five M.A theses and seven Ph.D dissertations. She has attended/ had her paper read at thirty nine workshops/ conferences within and outside Nigeria (Ghana, Cameroun, South Africa, Washington D.C.), has published widely in local and international peer reviewed journals (24 articles); has contributed chapters in books (11 chapters); published books (academic-8 and creative writing -5). Prof. Eno Nta has also been a consultant/ facilitator at workshops organised by MacMillan Publishers, schools (Catholic Schools Board, Hope Waddell) and organizations (MESSERAND), as well as served in editorial capacity (ActionAid & ActionHealth) and reviewer of academic (Federal University Wukari), creative and other types of documents (Margaret T. Udoh’s Beyond A Sojourner: Guidelines for the “Growing”). She has served as an external examiner (Imo State University, Abia State University, University of Uyo, Univcersity of Lagos), assessor for promotion at different universities (Ambrose Alli University, 2015) and (Nnamdi Azikiwe University, 2016 & 2017), a college of education (Cross River State College of Education) and polytechnic (Abia State Polytechnic). She has also served on accreditation teams in the University and for the NUC. Prof Eno Nta is a member of many professional bodies, chief of which are International Reading Association, Nigerian Pragmatics Association, Association of Nigerian Authors, African Literature Association, Literacy Association of Nigeria, and belongs to professional chat groups such as ELTeCS. Prof. Nta has been the convener of two ICALEL conferences, acted as the Chair of the LOC of many others (1st Faculty of Arts Conference), and participated actively at the Departmental and Faculty levels. She is presently the Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE); has been the Faculty of Arts Graduate School Chair (2008 -2012), Ag. Head of Department, (2004 – 2006), Co-ordinator, Diploma in English Studies and Communication (DEC), (1998 – 2002), Co-ordinator, Remedial English (1992-1994). She has twice been on sabbatical at the University of Port Harcourt (1995 - 1996) and the National Universities Commission (2016 - 2017). Prof. Nta became a permanent member of Senate in 2014 and is on the editing team of Senate Minutes. She is a member of many Senate (the Committee on Ranking and Visibility) and Council (Unical at 40) Committees. She is a member of the University Debating Committee and has served as an adjudicator in South Africa. Prof. Nta has served the University Community in different capacities in the Unical Women’s Association as welfare Officer and a member of the Crèche Board, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as Chairman of the Welfare Committee, and set up a Brownie, Junior Guiders Club and finally a reading club (Reading Cherubs) for children.
