About Dr. Elizabeth Esekong Andrew-Essien

Dr Elizabeth Esekong Andrew-Essien holds a Ph.D. (2006) in Environmental Resources Management from the Department of Geography and Regional Planning, University of Calabar, Calabar. Her main area of specialization is resource conflicts in the development and conservation of natural resources within human-inhabited protected areas such as the Cross River National Park (CRNP). Dr Elizabeth Esekong Andrew-Essien was employed into the services of the University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria in 2007 as Lecturer II in the Department of Geography and Regional Planning. Over the years, she has achieved significant milestones and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Resource Planning in the recently created Faculty of Environmental Science. Dr Elizabeth Andrew-Essien’s interest in environmental studies stems from the diverse environmental threats that result from unregulated human efforts. These include accelerated deforestation, poor waste management options, pollution and uncontrolled human actions. The consequences of these actions induce environmental quality deterioration and degradation through biodiversity loss, climate change and global warming, amongst others. The attendant consequences for environmental quality decline urgently demand experts to facilitate the institutionalization of intervention measures for environmental safeguards as platform for enhancing sustainable development. Dr Andrew-Essien’s career aim is to make meaningful contributions in the thematic area of environmental resource sustainability as well as provide practical principles, methods and techniques to enhance the practical preventive options to protect the integrity of the natural environment. Dr Andrew-Essien is a recipient of a number of Awards and Grants. These include the 2012 Brown International Advanced Research 2012 Institutes (BIARI) Providence, Rhode Island, USA; 2008 Idachaba Research Foundation Research Award; Dakar/Senegal International CORDESRIA Intervention Series on Decolonizing the Social Sciences (2008), CRUTECH Senate Research Grant, (2006) and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF)/ Chevron Research Grant- (2005). The professional teaching experience of Dr Andrew-Essien spans over fifteen years cutting across a range of interests. Teaching services have been provided at both under-graduate and post-graduate course-levels that focus on environmental challenges, resource planning, management and sustainability. These include courses such as: Resources of the Tropics, Environmental Planning and Management, Conservation Planning, Conflicts in Natural Resource Use Systems, Environmental Science, Environmental Ethics, Environmental Change, Biodiversity Studies; Ecology & Management of the Tropical Rainforest, Man and Environment, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation procedures; Conflicts in natural resource use, Community Adaptation patterns, Indigenous Knowledge Systems; Participatory Research Management; as well as Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA), and Climate change, amongst others. Other additional responsibilities in the Department include providing mentorship and technical guide to under-graduate and post graduate students; supervision of numerous undergraduate projects. At the post-graduate level, she has examined various and supervised over ten students’ theses and dissertations. Dr Andrew-Essien has served as journal reviewer and Editor for various journals such as World Development, Multi-Disciplinary Journal of Research and Development Perspectives and Journal of Science, Engineering and Technology (JOSET) and Human Ecology. To build capacity in the required area of specialization, Dr Andrew-Essien has attended over ten number of local and international conferences. Dr Andrew-Essien has participated in a several consultancies, programs, policy-formulation and project evaluations over the years in promoting biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability of natural resources. These include collaborations in programs such as UNEP Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA); Nigeria Strategic Investment framework for Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Phases 1 & 11 in Cross River State, the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) studies and the Participatory Governance Assessment (PGA) in Cross River State among others. The knowledge gained from these programs undoubtedly remain the catalyst to improving environmental management. Other research projects have focused on facilitating workshops along other renowned consultants to promote information and communication adequacy as means of promoting environmental resources decline through sustainable livelihood development. Dr Andrew-Essien is affiliated with a number of local and internationally relevant societies such as Society for Conservation Biology SCB, USA; Society for Conservation Biology (SCB), Nigeria Chapter, American Association of Geographers; Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG), Society for Occupational and Environmental Health (SOSEH) and Environmental Management Association of Nigeria (EMAN). Dr Elizabeth Andrew-Essien has over twenty publications in both local and foreign journals. She is married with three children.
