About Dr. Affiong Joseph Henry

Dr. Affiong Joseph Henry is an academic staff in the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife Resources Management, University of Calabar. She joined the Department of Animal Science, University of Calabar as a member of staff in 2005. She holds a Ph.D qualification in the area of Animal Breeding and Genetics. Through her studies on grasscutters (Thryonomys swinderianus) she was able to establish weaning age of as early as two weeks for this animal.  Dr. A. J. Henry has served in the Department as Assistant Examination Officer and substantive Examination Officer. She is currently the Department’s Coordinator for the year four practical programme under SIWES. She was appointed as Coordinating Manager for the University’s Poultry and Livestock farm (2009 – 2010). In 2010 she received the STEP-B grant for Innovators of Tomorrow.

She has supervised students both at the undergraduate and post graduate levels. She has a number of scholarly articles published in academic journals locally and internationally and is also a Registered Animal Scientist (RAS) with the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science.

She is currently carrying out research with her students on phenotypic characterization and molecular analysis of leptin gene in West African Dwarf goats in Cross River State. In addition to

Genomic analysis of indigenous and exotic strains of Achatina fulica using Variable Number Tandem Repeat (VNTR) sequences.
