About Prof. Margaret Mary Pius Okon

I joined the services of the University of Calabar as a Graduate Assistant in the erstwhile Department of Languages and Linguistics in November 1983, and rose through the ranks to the position of a Professor in 2006. In 1984, I competed for, and won on merit a French Government scholarship to study for a Doctorate degree in France, after having completed an M. Phil programme in French, with specialisation in language teaching. The University of Calabar granted me study leave without pay for the five years I studied in France. In spite of the unfair treatment, I returned to the University on completion of my Doctorate degree programme and have since remained a diligent member of staff, teaching at Diploma, Bachelors, Masters and Ph. D levels, and carrying out other duties as assigned to me by the authorities . I have successfully supervised 5 Ph.D and 5 Masters theses. I have received several awards and honours, including Fellow of INTERCAFT, conferred by the Inter-College Association of French Teachers in collaboration with the French Embassy in Nigeria, in recognition of my contribution to the teaching and learning of the French language in Nigeria. I have served on the Editorial Boards of Calabar Studies in Languages (CASIL) and International Journal of Linguistics and Communication (IJLC). Additionally, I have served as Editor of The Mothers Magazine for 8 years, founding Editor of MATERICA for 7 years, and Editor of The Millenium Mothers for 2 years. I have attended and presented papers at 30 conferences - locally, nationally and internationally and currently collaborating with Dr. Ivor Miller on the study of Ekpe songs, and with some linguists to translate the Bible into Ibibio. I belong to the Nigerian Academy of letters (NAL), Linguistic Association of Nigeria (LAN), the University French Teachers Association of Nigeria (UFTAN) and the Forum of Women Professors (FWP), among others. I have 36 scholarly publications to my credit.
