With a Master’s degree in Fisheries, Sunday Ben Ekanem was employed as an Assistant Lecturer in August 1982 in the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Calabar, when the department was in dare need of a fisheries scientist to teach fisheries courses. While teaching, Ekanem registered with the University of Calabar Graduate School for his Ph.D degree which he got in 1992, with specialization in Fisheries and Aquaculture. His Ph.D research was on silver catfish (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus). The research was made possible by a grant he obtained from the International Foundation for Science (IFS). Courses he taught at the University of Calabar are Remedial Biology, Introductory Biology, Invertebrate Zoology, Ichthyology, Physical and Chemical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Biogeography, Zoogeography, Aquaculture, Fish Processing Techniques, Applied Limnology, Fisheries Resources Management, Aquatic Pollution, Principles of Ecology, Biological Techniques, Marine Biology, Vertebrate Embryology, Animal Ecology, Hydrobiology, Zoological Techniques, wildlife Management and Conservation, Ethology, Fish Feed Technology, Environmental Pollution. Wildlife Ecology, Advance Fish Nutrition, Environmental Pollution. Sunday Ekanem rose through the ranks to become a Professor in 2003. He has published many articles in reputable International Journals and in Local Journals. He has been listed as a resource person for the Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Professor Ekanem has been a Supervisor and Coordinator of Undergraduate research and seminar, Examination Officer, Academic Adviser, Chairman and Coordinator of the Departmental Graduate Programmes and Head, Department of Zoology. He has supervised hundred of undergraduate student projects and many M.Sc and Ph.D students. Professor Ekanem has served as an External Examiner for the University of Uyo, University of Benin and Michael Opara University of Agriculture, Umudike. He was a member of accreditation teams that visited the University of Port Harcourt, Delta State University, Abraka and Ahamadu Bello University, Zaria. He has been professorial accessor for CRUTECH, Calabar, University of Uyo, University of Abuja, Michael Opara University of Agriculture and Ebonyi State University. .
