Professor Patience Samson-Akpan started Her nursing career in 1978 at the School of Nursing, Calabar and graduated in 1981 after which she proceeded to the School of Midwifery and graduated in 1982. She had an award of the “best academic student” for the three years in School of Nursing. She completed her professional nursing education at the University of Ibadan in 1988 and specialized in nursing education. Thereafter, she obtained Master's Degree in Public Health in 2002 from University of Calabar, Nigeria. She also studied Health Education and obtained PhD from the same University. Other training programmes attended are as follows: Global Nursing Leadership Institute (GNLI) of ICN in Switzerland, Mentorship, Grant writing and Qualitative Health Research. She started her teaching career with the then Polytechnic Calabar which later became Cross River University of Technology in 1989 where She rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer. She also taught briefly as Senior Lecturer in Akwa Ibom State, Polytechnic before she joined the services of the University of Calabar in 2005 as Lecturer 1. She is currently a Professor of Nursing in the Department of Nursing Science, University of Calabar, Nigeria. She was inducted as a “Fellow of West African College of Nursing” in 2009. She has also authored 1 book, 4 book chapters and published 76 articles in local and international journals including refereed conference proceedings. She has attended 68 international and local conferences and has presented 61 academic papers. Her research interests are in Health promotion/Education and Nursing in which she has completed 92 researches. In the university, and outside the university, she has served in several capacities: Currently, Post Graduate (MSc Nursing) Coordinator; Member, Faculty of Allied Post Graduate Committee, Member Examination Vetting Committee, University of Calabar; Member University of Calabar Medical Centre Board of Management, Chairman, Departmental Accreditation Committee 2019; Member, West African College of Nursing Board of Examiners, other post held are: Departmental Students’ Adviser 2005 2009; Examination Officer: 2008-2011; Departmental Administrative Assistant: 2007-2009, and 2011-2014; She was the Ag. Head of Department of Nursing Science, University of Calabar 2014-2016, Member University of Calabar Students’ Welfare Board of Governors: 2011-2013; Member of Board of Governors, University of Calabar Centre for General Studies: 2011-2013; Member of Board of Management, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Nigeria 2013- 2015; Chairman and Member NUC Accreditation Committee 2016-2019; Member, Committee on Assimilation of UCTH School of Nursing Programme to University of Calabar 2008 & 2012; Departmental Committee for the development of Post Graduate Programme for Nursing Science, University of Calabar 2010-2014; Member of N&MCN Accreditation Committee 2012 - date; Coordinator of Examination for General Nursing, 2005-2008, 2011-2014; SIWES Coordinator 2011-2014; Member of Curriculum Review Committee 2011 till date; Member Departmental Examination Committee 2009-date, Member of Staff Development Committee, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Nigeria: 2013 -2015; Examiner N&MCN 2006 till date; Resource Person for N&MCN from 2006 till date; Academic Adviser to Year IV B.N.Sc. students 2005 till date; Member, Faculty Post-graduate Curriculum on Nursing Development Committee; Member, Departmental Maiden Induction Committee 2011/12; Member, Departmental Induction Committee 2011/13; Member, Faculty Congress Planning Committee, 2012/13; Member Medical College Mock Accreditation Committee 2013 -2019; She has several awards in her honour such as “Best Academic Student Award from 1987-1981”, School of Nursing, Calabar. She belongs to several professional Association such as National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM); Association of Nurse Educators; National Association of Professional Educators; Women Health Organization of Nigeria (WHON) Akwa Ibom State Health Education Committee; ICHPER-SD (International Council for Health Education, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance); International AIDS Society; Society for AIDS in Africa (SAA); West African College of Nursing (FWACN); 2009 International Council of Nurses (ICN); Association of Graduate Nurses of Nigeria; she is married to Mr. Ebong Bob Samson-Akpan an Astute Administrator and former Registrar of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua. The Marriage is blessed with many children. She loves reading, cooking, jogging and stands for excellence. .
