Dr. Ofem Effiong Ofem was employed in the University of Calabar as Graduate Assistant in the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Medical Sciences on 31st March, 1999, three months after he completed his National Youth Service in Jalingo, Taraba State. He has since risen through the ranks and was promoted to Associate Professor of Physiology in October, 2016. He was a beneficiary of the Saint John Bosco Scholarship for tertiary education. In 1992, he gained admission into the University of Calabar, Calabar to study Human Physiology. He completed his first degree in 1997. He obtained his M.Sc. degree in 2003 and Ph.D degree in 2009, both in Cardiovascular Physiology from the University of Calabar. He was a recipient of University of Calabar postgraduate study fellowship award from 2004-2009 and Cross River State postgraduate scholarship award from 2005-2008. He also won the University of Calabar convocation prize for best graduating M. Sc. Student in Physiology for the 2003/2004 session at the 21st convocation of the University of Calabar. He has been an examination officer, timetable officer, Sub-Dean of Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences (FBMS), and Ag. Head of Physiology Department from October 1, 2016 to September 30, 2018. He has been a member of several committees in the University of Calabar including, the central time table committee, departmental accreditation committee and examination malpractice committee of the FMBS. He is a reviewer to some scientific journals like Asian Journal of Medical Sciences. He has over 80 articles published in local and foreign learned scientific Journals which are also widely cited by other researchers. He has attended several scientific conferences and also presented many scientific papers. He has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Medical, Basic Medical and other Allied Medical Sciences for several years. He has taught many courses in Physiology including Biostatistics and Research methodology and has held several talks to students on the Strategies for Students’ Success in Examination. He has successfully supervised over 20 postgraduate students including Ph.D., M.Sc. and PGD in Physiology. He is a member of the Physiological Society of Nigeria and Neuroscience Society of Nigeria. .
