Prof. John Okokoh Shiyam

Prof John Okokoh Shiyam is a Professor in the Department of Crop Science, University of Calabar, Nigeria. He obtained a B.Sc. (Crop Science) degree and a M.Sc. degree in Agronomy from the prestigious University of Calabar, Nigeria in 1991 and 2000, respectively. He also obtained a PhD in Agronomy from the Federal University of Technology Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria in 2005. He was employed as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Crop Science, University of Calabar in 1999, and rose through the ranks to a Professor in 2017, Prof. Shiyam is a member of several professional bodies including the Agricultural Society of Nigeria (ASN), Crop Science Society of Nigeria (CSSN), and Organic Agriculture Project in Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria (OAPTIN). He has attended and presented well researched papers in different conferences and other academic fora. He has successfully supervised many Ph.D and M.Sc students as well as several Post Graduate Diploma students. Prof. Shiyam has published several articles in high quality local and international journal to his credit. He has held several administrative and academic positions including Sub-Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife Resources Management from 2008-2010, Ag. Head, Department of Crop Science (2010-2012). He has also held the position of Chairman, Faculty Graduate Committee as well as the Graduate School Board Coordinator for the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife Resources Management, and Faculty of Oceanography. Prof. Shiyam’s current research interest is focused on organic agriculture, Climate change and agriculture as well as the agronomy of orphan local crop plants. .
