Prof. Ekom Robert Akpan

Ekom Robert Akpan is a Professor of Environmental Chemistry with Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry. Has been in the academia since 1984, rising through the ranks to be appointed full Professor in 2006. He is a beneficiary of many scholarships and fellowships including, Cross River State Scholarship, Federal Government of Nigeria Scholarship, University of Calabar Staff Development Fellowship, DAAD Fellowship and the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation Fellowship. He has taught widely in the Physical Sciences, Marine and Environmental Sciences and has supervised/mentored widely at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has served as external examiner to several universities and assessed several Associate Professors and Professors in Nigerian Universities. Prof. Akpan has served in many capacities within and outside the University of Calabar including Head of Department of Physical Oceanography, Director of the Institute of Oceanography, member, Strategic Action Plan Committee and member of the University Senate Examinations Vetting Committee among others. He was a member of the Federal Government’s Team on African Peer Review Mechanism-National Working Group of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development in 2008. Prof. Ekom Robert Akpan is a core Environmentalist and professional in Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Auditing and Environmental Evaluation and has participated in many Environmental Impact Assessment studies within Nigeria. Prof. Ekom Akpan is a member of the Federal Ministry of Environment’s EIA Review Panels. He served as the pioneer Environmental Manager to ZB Joint Venture Limited during the construction of the Obite-Ubeta-Rumuji Gas pipeline in Nigeria. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the African Journal of Environmental Pollution and Health. He is a member of scientific team on the International Atomic Energy Agency supported research project (IAEA-RAF/7/008) on nutrients, heavy metals, hydrocarbons and organochlorine pesticides in water, sediments and seafood in the Eastern Niger Delta. Prof Akpan has served as Senior Environmental Advisor to Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd, Port Harcourt in 2017. His core area of research is on oil spill forensics in the marine environment. His research also spans Impact of Coastal and Maritime activities on Quality of Nigeria’s Coastal Waters and impact of Ballast Water-Related Invasive Species in Nigerian Waters: Prof. Ekom Robert Akpan is a member of several professional societies including Chemical Society of Nigeria, Nigerian Society for Biological Conservation, Nigerian Environmental Society, Fisheries Society of Nigeria, American Association for the Advancement of Science and has been cited in the Maquis World Who is Who of Science and Engineering, USA. He has over thirty publications in high impact journals and Proceedings. .
