Prof. Bassey Ephraim is a reputable and certified Geologist, majoring in the areas of Petrology, Geochemistry and Environmental/Exploration Geology. He is currently a lecturer, Researcher and Consultant with the University of Calabar, Nigeria. His teaching and research interests include geothermometry, geobarometry and evaluation of P-T conditions of formation of Basement rocks; geochemistry and characterization of basement rocks; investigation of granulites and related rocks, and economic appraisal of mineral deposits, especially in southern Nigeria. He also has vested interests in researches of environmental/geo-hazard relevance, and was actively involved in the World Bank Assisted – Nigeria Erosion & Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) funded research on monitoring and evaluation baseline survey for Itate-Okuku Gully Erosion Site, Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. Prof. Ephraim is currently working on mineral chemistry evaluation and geothermobarometric investigations of granitic and migmatitic rocks of Northern Obudu area, Southeastern Nigeria. Prof. Ephraim commenced his academic career in the then Anambra State University of Science and Technology, where he made giant strides and immense contributions toward the growth of the then New University. He later had a short stay at the Niger Delta University, Amassoma – Bayelsa State. In 2008, he took up Appointment as Lecturer I in the Department of Geology of the University of Calabar. He was promoted to the rank of professor in 2018. Prof. Bassey Ephraim holds a Bachelor of Science degree Geology from University of Calabar and a Master of Science degree in Mineral Exploration from University of Ibadan. He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Petrology & Geochemistry, obtained from the University of Calabar, in 2006. Prof. Ephraim has successfully supervised/mentored and co-supervised many B.Sc., PGD, M.Sc. and Ph.D students, and currently has a myriad of postgraduate and undergraduate students under his tutelage/supervision. He has attended many conferences, Seminars, workshops and other scientific meetings within and outside Nigeria. So far, he has presented nine conference papers, and has to his credit, over thirty published articles in peer reviewed local and international journals. In his academic vocation, Prof. Ephraim collaborates actively with researchers from within and outside Nigeria. Prof. Ephraim has served many learned academic journals including the Earth Science Research Journal, Indian Journal of Earth Science, Journal of Mining and Geology, Tropical Journal of Applied and Natural Science, etc., as peer reviewer. He was the an Editorial Assistant to the Journal of Mining and Geology between 1994 and 2013, and was part of the Editorial Team that produced the Program and Book of Abstract of the 34th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, Ife’98. Furthermore, Prof. Ephraim has served as Consultant to many organizations/clients including the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, National Centre for Marine Geoscience, Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, etc. Prof. Ephraim is a member of many professional associations, notably: Council of Mining Engineers and Geoscientists, Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologists and Association of Geoscientist in Developing Countries. Furthermore, Prof. Ephraim has distinguished himself in several leadership positions within and outside the University of Calabar, some of which includes Chairman, Departmental Fieldwork Committee, from 2015 to date; Chairman, Earned Allowance Committee, from 2014 to date; Chairman, Faculty Graduate Committee (2014 to 2016); Chairman, Departmental Graduate Committee (2012 to 2014); Chairman, Graduate School Vetting Committee for Unit B (2015 to 2016); Steering Committee Member, University of Calabar Solar Power Project, from 2017 to date; Member, Department of Geology Examination Misconduct Committee from 2010 to date; Member, Graduate School Board, from 2014 to 2016; Member, University of Calabar Senior Staff Club, from 2009 to date; Coordinator, Marine Geology Programme, from 2010 to 2011; Secretary, Departmental Academic Board, from 2009 to 2012; Examinations Officer (Departmental), from 2009 to 2011; Graduate School Representative to the Faculty of Marine Sciences, from 2015 to date; Faculty of Science Representative in Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, from 2014 2016; and Faculty of Science Representative to Faculty of Education, from 2012 to 2014. Finally, Prof. Bassey Ephraim is a talented comedian, and also loves watching football and Nigerian movies. He is happily married to Mrs. Etta Ephraim, and the marriage is blessed with four children..
