Dr. (Mrs.) Atim David Asitok is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Biological sciences, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria. She was employed by the University of Calabar on April 11, 1994 as a Graduate Assistant and rose through the ranks to her current position. She obtained her B.Sc. (1992), M.Sc. (1999) and Ph.D. (2013) degrees in Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology from the University of Calabar. Dr. (Mrs.) Asitok earned the University of Calabar staff development awards in 1996 and 2004 for her M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs respectively. She teaches General Microbiology, Microbial diversity and systematics, Biodeterioration, Petroleum and Environmental Microbiology, Microbial physiology, Microbial Genetics, Advanced fermentation technology, Advanced Microbial techniques and serology and Industrial Microbiology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has successfully supervised 5 PGDs and 2 M.Sc. theses, co-supervised 1 Ph.D. thesis and is currently supervising 7 post-graduate students, besides the over 90 undergraduate completed projects. Dr. Atim Asitok has attended and presented papers at national and international conferences. Her current research projects include (i) Microbial production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (ii) Development of a consortium of bioluminescent bacteria for use in ecosystem hydrocarbon-pollutant bio-monitoring and (iii) Microbial production of gelatinase-free L-asparaginase for treatment of lymphoblastic leukemia. Dr. Asitok is a member of a number of professional associations including the Nigerian Society for Microbiology (NSM), Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and Biopesticide Society of Nigeria (BpSN). She has published 32 peer-reviewed articles in both local and international journals. Besides teaching and research, she has handled several responsibilities and administrative roles in the university and her community. She has served the University as an Acting Head, Department of Microbiology (2016-2018) and is currently the Examinations officer of the Department and Chairman, Departmental Post Graduate committee. .
