Prof. Aniekan Effiom Edet

Prof. Edet attended Federal Government College Port Harcourt (Nigeria) and obtained the West African School Certificate (WASC) in June 1978. He later graduated BSc) and PhD. Geology (Hydrogeology/Engineering Geology) from the University of Calabar, Calabar (Nigeria) in 1983 and 1993 respectively; and the MSc Geology (Engineering Geology/Hydrogeology) from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan (Nigeria) in 1985. He holds a Certificate in Hydrogeology/Engineering Geology of Tropical and Sub Tropical Regions from University of Tuebingen (Germany) in 1988. Aniekan held the German Academic Exchange Service fellowship in hydrogeology at the University of Tuebingen in 1993, 1999; and the Alexander von Humboldt research fellowship the Technical University of Mining, Freiberg/Germany in 2001-2003 and July–October 2013. He also held the Alexander von Humboldt research fellowship July–October 2010 at the University of Tuebingen/Germany. Between October 2005 and March 2006, he was the University of Liverpool, UK auspices of the Commonwealth, UK. Aniekan was a recipient of the NMGS/Geological Survey of Nigeria/Okezie Award for the best published work 2001and 2004 and NMGS/Total Award, 2008 for best paper presented at the NMGS Conference held in Akure in 2007. Aniekan started his career in 1986 as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Calabar, Calabar and was promoted to the rank of Professor of Geology in October 2001. He has served and still serving as external examiner to many universities for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the geosciences. Prof. Edet has served as a chairman and member of the National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation panels for accreditation of geosciences programmes in Nigerian universities. Prof. Edet has graduated more than several BSc, MSc and PhD candidates in Hydrogeology/Contaminant Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology and Environmental Geology. Aniekan major research over the years were on the Exploration and exploitation for groundwater using remote sensing and geophysical techniques; Geotechnical characterization of Nigerian carbonate rocks and soils for construction; Baseline evaluation of potable water quality; Environmental impact associated with waste disposal, oil spillage and saltwater intrusion on groundwater quality; Development of methods to assess the vulnerability of aquifers to contamination; Evaluation of the interaction between surface water and groundwater and Processes controlling the chemistry of groundwater. These research activities have produced to date more 70 publications in both local and international peer review journals. Also, the outcome of these studies has been presented in more than 30 conferences in Nigeria, Libya, Germany, Namibia, South Africa, United Kingdom and France. Aniekan is a member of the following associations: Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologist (NAH), Nigerian Association of Engineering Geology and Environment (NAEGE), International Association of Hydrogeologist (IAH), Association of Geoscientists for International Development (AGID), Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationist (NAPE), Geological Society of Africa (GSFA), GeoScience Information in Africa (GIRAF) and Registered with Council for Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) .
