Dr. Liwhuliwhe Betiang

Dr. Liwhu Betiang obtained a liberal university education from the University of Ife (BA, Dramatic Arts) in 1985; University of Calabar (MA, Arts Administration); and the premier University of Ibadan (PhD, Media Arts Administration & Criticism). With brief teaching spells and a decade of broadcasting with NTA Maiduguri/Cross River Broadcasting Corporation (CRBC), he joined the University of Calabar in 1998. Outside many academic publications in books and co-edited volumes, (Theatre & Media in the Third Millennium (2016, with Edde Iji & Andrew-Essien) and reputable journals (including Sage, RiDE, Sociolinguistics, KOME; and Texture, etc.) he has also published three novels: Beneath the Rubble (2009), The Cradle on the Scales (2011), The Rape of Hope (2016); and the Plays: Our Forest Our Future (2000, with Arikpo Arikpo and Barclays Ayakoroma); and, Echoes of Mary Slessor (2017, with Senate Ewah). He also writes and produces for Radio/TV (including the series/serials: The Twist, and Linda’s Joint). Beyond mentorship through graduate supervision, he has also groomed budding writers as longest running Chairman of Carnival Calabar Literary Competition; and is also a Trinidad & Tobago trained Carnival Adjudicator. Dr. Liwhu Betiang is currently a permanent Faculty member and Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre, Film & Carnival Studies, University of Calabar, where he teaches Critical Theory, Criticism and Media Studies; and has also taught in related departments at the University of Jos; and Cross River University of Technology, Calabar. He’s on the editorial boards of several journals; and a Publons’ recognized reviewer. Betiang has consulted for Living Earth Nigeria Foundation (LENF) and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in the field of Media Scripting, Production and Community Development Interventions. .
