Dr Ekpoanwan Esienumoh was employed by the University of Calabar in July 13, 2000 as a Lecturer II in the Department of Nursing Science. She was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of Midwifery in 2016. Mrs Esienumoh obtained her B.Sc. degree in Nursing Education in 1988 from the University of Ibadan, and Master of Public Health from University of Calabar in 1998, both in Nigeria. She was awarded a PhD degree in Midwifery in 2011 by the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. She was admitted as a Fellow of the West African College of Nursing, Faculty of Maternal and Child Health in 2006. She belongs to many Professional Associations including National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, International Council of Nursing, International Confederation of Midwives, Confederation of African Midwives, International member, Royal College of Midwives, United Kingdom. Her main area of research interest is the prevention of maternal and child mortality in which she has carried out some researches with emphasis on empowering rural communities to take action on prevention of this scourge. Since joining the University of Calabar, Dr Ekpoanwan has been deeply involved in the teaching, research and mentoring of both undergraduate and postgraduate students nationally and internationally. She has successfully supervised, co-supervised and examined many graduate students’ theses within and outside the University of Calabar. Dr Ekpoanwan Esienumoh is a regular participant in many local and international conferences, seminars, workshops, symposia and other update programmes in her area of specialty where she presents papers in some. She has published over twenty five articles in both local and international peer reviewed journals. She has also served as reviewer to many journal publishing companies. Dr Esienumoh has served the University in many capacities including Examinations Officer between 2001 and 2007, Acting Head of Department of Nursing Science from 2012 to 2014, member of University of Calabar Senate between 2012 and 2014. Dr Ekpoanwan served her sabbatical Leave appointment at the Garden City University College, Kumasi, Ghana, where she was also the Head of Department of Midwifery between 2017 and 2019. She is a beneficiary of many awards, grants and scholarships including the 2016 Institutional-based TETFund Research Grant and the Cross River State Nursing Foundation Grant in 2015. Others are Best graduating Nursing student from School of Nursing Anua (Ituk Mbang Annex), Akwa Ibom State in 1977, Federal Government of Nigeria Postgraduate Scholarship for her Masters degree programme in Public Health, Cross River State Government of Nigeria’s Financial Assistance for the payment of tuition for her PhD programme in the University of Manchester, United Kingdom, and University of Calabar Study Fellowship to undertake her PhD programme in the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. Furthermore, Dr Esienumoh has benefited from many sponsorship programmes including sponsorship by the University of Manchester, United Kingdom to attend International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Conference in Glasgow, United Kingdom in 2008, sponsorship by ICM to attend the ICM Conference in Durban, South Africa in 2011, TETFund sponsorship to attend ICM Conference in Prague, Czech Republic, June, 2014. Dr Ekpoanwan has floated a non-governmental organisation called Wholesome Life Support Initiative, which she has been using for creation of awareness, education and advocacy on Community Health Issues with strong emphases on the prevention of maternal and child morbidities and mortalities. She also undertakes several assignments for the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. Mrs Ekpoanwan is married with children. .
