Mr. Edet Asuquo Thompson

Thompson had his first job experience in 2008 during the one year mandatory NYSC scheme. During this period, he served with Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Danko wasagu local Government Area of Kebbi state, Nigeria, as the only Physics teacher in the School. In 2009, after completing the NYSC program he took up a teaching appointment at Heroes International College, Calabar. At Heroes College, he served as a physics teacher, after few months of hard work and immense contribution to the rapid grow of the School, he was appointed the Vice Principal Administration of the School. The new position notwithstanding, he was still teaching Physics in the Senior Secondary section of the School. His hard work and unrelenting commitment paid off, as all the pioneer students of Heroes College cleared their papers in the WASSCE with flying colours. He was admitted in the 2010/2011 academic Session to study Nuclear Physics for a Master’s degree in the University of Calabar. After the successful completion of the Master’s degree program, Thompson pick up another teaching job with the Nigerian Navy Secondary School (NNSS), Calabar. He taught Physics in the Senior Secondary section of the School, and also serve as a class teacher until he was offered an appointment as an Assistant Lecturer in the department of Physics, University of Calabar in 2018. Edet Thompson attended at the Q.I.C Group School, Nung Ukot, Itam, Itu, LGA, Akwa Ibom State, from 1985-1991, where obtained the First School Leaving Certificate. He proceeded to West Itam Secondary School Ekit, Itam 2. Itu LGA of Akwa Ibom state, from 1991 to 1997. Thompson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, a Master of Science degree in Nuclear physics both from the University of Calabar, a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the National Teachers’ Institute and currently studying for a Philosophy of Science degree (Ph.D.) in Theoretical Physics at the University of Calabar. He has attended the following conferences; Nigerian Institute of Physics annual conference, 2010 at CERD, University of Ile-Ife, Nigeria, 1st Nigerian Conference on Physical Science organised by the Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Calabar in 2019 and 2nd Nigerian Conference on Physical Science organised by the Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Calabar, 2021. It is so fascinating to go beyond the study of physical systems at the macroscopic level to the seemingly ‘’invisible’’ microscopic level, and to understand the nature of the energy that drives physical systems at this level. Interestingly, studying physical systems beyond the level that human eye can see is made comprehensibly easy using models. The use of mathematical models to study systems that cannot be seen with the ‘’naked eye’’ was the motivation for the choice of his first academic project in his undergraduate days. This project was on the study of atomic structure using the popular atomic shell model. Thompson has participated in a number of researches and has published five papers in reputable journals. Currently, he is on a research to study analytically the atomic and sub-atomic systems with the aim of modelling such systems to examine their properties and peculiar characteristics. Finally, the excitement and motivation that drive this Physicist is the need to unravel the intricacies in nature and recommend ways that the forces of nature and it interconnectivity with humanity can be harness for the betterment of man, thereby fulfilling the mandate of ‘’dominating over the physical realm’’. .
