The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has commended the Head of the Department of Environmental Education, Dr Cassidy Agbor for his display of creative ideas.

Prof. Obi made the commendation during the formal unveiling of a statue that represents the sustainable development ideals, as well as, being symbolic of the Department's philosophy.

Speaking in a brief unveiling ceremony at the Department's premises, the University helmsman appreciated the Department for celebrating World Environment Day, adding that, this year's theme "Eco-system Restoration" is a very captivating one that involves all, even as she reiterated that the restoration of the ecosystem requires a collective effort and should not be left to the individual.

 

In her words; "Restoring environment is a collective effort not a one-man thing. So all hands must be on deck to restore our environment. We say that environmental sustainability is everyone's business because we all live in it."

Prof. Obi advised staff to think of better ways of restoring their individual spaces as soon as possible by planting trees where applicable and tidying up their immediate surroundings.

While charging staff to put in their best in ensuring that the Department steps up from interim to earning full accreditation, the Vice Chancellor said to achieve that would be dependent mostly on the attitude of staff towards accomplishing that objective.

To this end, she urged staff to be more diligent to work to earn full accreditation, disclosing that Management was expecting the National Universities Commission (NUC) later in the year.

 

In a welcome address, the Head of the Department of Environmental Education, Dr Cassidy Agbor said the event was geared towards celebrating sustainable development which he identified as the philosophy of the department.
