The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has called on the new Student Union Government (SUG) of the Institution to justify the mandate given to them during the just concluded SUG elections.

The Vice-Chancellor made the call while inaugurating the 2020/2021 SUG Executive at a brief event held in the main auditorium of the University's Senate Chambers.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Michael Okom, the Vice-Chancellor thank God for the success of the entire electoral process, this is even as she commended CUECO and the Independent Observers Committee for a job well done.

Prof. Obi admonished the new student leaders not to only exhibit knowledge, but to also show the capacity to lead.

In her words, "Leadership is not being diagnostic, but being pragmatic"

"See what you have achieved as a platform to launch yourself going forward".

The University helmsman who reiterated Management's open-door policy urged the new SUG to take advantage of her disposition to listen.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman, Calabar University Electoral Committee (CUECO) Prof. Takim Asu Ojuah thanked the University Management for the opportunity to serve, this was even as he highlighted the processes that built up to the emergence of the new exco.

The CUECO Chairman also informed that the process to produce other arms of the new SUG would be concluded after the yuletide break.

In a remark, the Chairman, Independent Observers Committee, Dr Boypa Egbe while also thanking the Vice-Chancellor for the appointment asserted his belief that the committee delivered on its mandate.

Describing the election process as harmonious, Dr Egbe commended the aspirants for their discipline even as he lauded the Dean of Students and his staff for the excellent coordination of the process.

In the same vein, the Dean of Students, Dr Tony Eyang charged the new SUG executive to be forward-looking, striving to out-perform their predecessor to edge their names in the annals of history.

Dr Eyang used the occasion to appreciate all stakeholders for their time and sacrifices towards ensuring the success of the process.

Delivering his acceptance speech, the new SUG President, Comrade. Tyrone Bassey gave God all the glory for the outcome of the elections.

 

Comrade. Bassey who assured Management that his time in office would be characterized by a harmonious collaboration, however, asserted his determination to ensure that Nigerian students get the best out of leadership.

 

Comrade. Bassey has as members of his Exco; Chinaza Obasi - Vice President; Ofem Francis - Secretary-General; Ugochukwu Floyd - Deputy Secretary-General; Mary Abue Ubong - Fin Sec.

 

Others include Omagu Paul - Dir of Welfare; Egbai Santos - Dir of Information; Egede Tobi - Dir of Sports and Mitchell Akaniyene - Dir of Socials.
