Following the hubbub that trailed the unfortunate demise of a student of the Department of Library and Information Sciences, University of Calabar, the Late Miss Precious Agini, the University Management has taken steps to ensure proper closure of the unfortunate incident, this is even as Management has expressed her deepest regret over the painful loss.

Addressing a crucial meeting of stakeholder groups before their departure to the deceased town in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Florence Obi expressed her deepest regret over the unfortunate incident, reiterating that Management remains committed to unravelling the circumstances leading to her demise.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Eno Grace Nta, the Vice Chancellor while extending Management's condolences to the family and those grieved by the loss, said the thinking of Management is on how to grant proper closure to the family.

 

 

To this end, the pained University helmsman informed the meeting that the Institution has put in place certain things to ameliorate, especially, the fiscal burden the unfortunate incident has placed on the family.

She thanked the family for granting the University permission to conduct an autopsy, which the university has sponsored, to ascertain the cause of death and help douse the tension caused mostly by misinformation.

She also informed the meeting that now that the date for the funeral has been fixed, the University has opted to, among other things, take up the mortuary bills, provide a casket, a hearse and 2 buses to convey people to and from the burial, as well as, provide some form of refreshment and financial support for the family.

In their separate remarks, the Deans, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences; Students' Affairs and the Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, Prof. Arikpo B. Arikpo, Dr. Tony Eyang and Dr Eucharia U. Okwueze respectively while expressing their condolences thanked the bereaved family for the understanding shown, and this is even as they urged the students to be more circumspect in dealing with situations.

The Dean of Students decried the avalanche of misinformation that trailed the unfortunate event and called for caution going forward.

Speaking on behalf of the Community of Tiv Students (CTS), Unical Chapter, the Patron, Dr Stanislaus Iyorza commended the Vice Chancellor and Management of the Institution for the show of love, empathy and concern, especially, for the welfare of students.

Similarly, the representative of the bereaved family and Patron II of the CTS, Dr Terfa Swem and the SUG President, Comr. Tyron Bassey thanked the Vice Chancellor for her commitment and motherly disposition towards issues that affect members of the university community.

The meeting which was chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Eno G. Nta had in attendance the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Science Education – Prof. Arikpo B. Arikpo; Dean of Students, Dr Tony Eyang; HOD, Lib & Info Science – Dr E. U Okwueze and the representative of the family – Dr Terfa Swem.

Others include the CTS President, SUG Executive President – Comr. Tyron Bassey; SUG, Vice President – Comr. Obasi Chinaza Juliet; Comr. Apenda Aondouev A.; C.C.O. MAN O' WAR – Abaa Didacus; President, National Union of Benue State Students – Comr. Mende Caleb and the Desk Officer, SUG, Students' Affairs – Mr Imeh Bassey.
