Message from the Head of Department
Welcome to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Calabar, Nigeria. The department is one of the seven departments in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology in University of Calabar, Nigeria, that started in 2017. The aim is to produce competent civil engineering graduates who are self-reliant and possess the requisite broad-based academic knowledge, innovativeness, IT and entrepreneurial skills needed to compete anywhere in the world and solve societal problems for the comfort of mankind.
The work we do as practicing, and future engineers is critical for an ever-changing world. Civil engineers design infrastructure that powers our modern society, such as roads, bridges, buildings, and water distribution systems. Environmental engineers create solutions for responsible use of resources and energy to protect our air and water supplies. Together, civil and environmental engineers are creating a stronger, safer, and more sustainable world, which we call the Built Environment.
We currently run Bachelor of Engineering degree programme (B. Eng.) in Civil Engineering. We intend to introduce another degree programme in Environmental Engineering and higher degrees programmes in the nearest future.
Since its establishment, the department is focusing on continuous improvement of quality of education through (i) development of highly qualified faculties and staff, (ii) development of laboratory facilities for research works, (iii) getting best quality students at the intake, (iv) continuous monitoring and evaluation of the students, (v) counselling in classes and beyond the class hours, (v) arrangement of workshops, seminar, conference, and short courses on special issues in the relevant field, (vi) encouraging students to participate in the extra-curricular activities, (viii) arrangement of internship for the students in the government and private organizations, (ix) monitoring of the performance of alumni's in the job field, (x) getting feedback regarding alumni from the employer, (xi) continuous up-gradation of the syllabus, (xii) collaboration with academia and industries, (xiii) accreditation of the programs by local and international bodies, etc.
The career opportunities available to our graduates are indeed broad and diverse allowing careers in Structural, Geotechnical, Environmental Assessment and Pollution Control, Transportation/Highway, Water Resources/Hydraulics, Materials and Construction Project Management and Hydrology.
We invite you to explore our website for ample opportunities that the department offers and contact us if you need further information. Your feedback regarding any issues of the department will be highly appreciated.
